One of the restaurants on-property that is often overlooked is the Kona Cafe.
Located in the Polynesian Resort, right near the extremely popular 'Ohana, the Kona Cafe features a Polynesian-inspired menu that hits the spot every time. Outside of the restaurant, while waiting for your table, you can gaze down at the lovely fountain feature in the lobby.
The Kona Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We have eaten both breakfast and dinner, and we were very impressed both times! The breakfast menu has lots of choices, and one choice you hear a lot about is the Tonga Toast. Essentially, it is french toast stuffed with a banana, and it's amazing. The last time I ate here, however, I tried the Pineapple-Macadamia Pancakes.
These beauties were topped with crushed pineapple and macadamia-nut butter, which is every bit as scrumptious as it sounds!
My favorite dinner entree is the Fish of the Day with Forbidden Rice. I have had this dish served with both salmon and mahi mahi. The mahi mahi version is pictured below.
As you can see, forbidden rice is black rice. The preparation of this dish is amazing. While I don't have a picture of it, the Kona Coffee rubbed pork chop is also delicious.
Dessert options vary, and you can peek at them up at the preparation station toward the back of the Cafe. Pictured here are versions of a lava cake and of a chocolate fondue.
My husband has a nut/soy/sesame allergy, and this restaurant does a great job of accommodating allergies. Because the dessert he wanted contained nuts, the chef was nice enough to bring him up the "mother of all Dole Whips" from the quick service restaurant!
You can also see the remnants of french-pressed Kona Coffee behind the ice cream... I highly recommend trying some if you are a coffee drinker!
